Back in the spring of 2023, I wrote a blog about how I pivoted from various ideas to arrive at Plan With Flow. Well, the jury is out now that startup did not work despite several months of focused work. But I still believe it is a great product, just maybe not a good business model. So I am open sourcing the project and making it freely available on https://planwithflow.com.
Plan With Flow is a tool to build a financial model in an easy, graphical way. You can pull various financial elements into a canvas and connect them together; the resulting diagram simulates the flow of money month by month. You can also construct the canvas model by chatting with the "Plan With Flow GPT" and ask questions about the future and your financial plan using the chatbox.
The philosophy behind this app is to give everyone a financial planner. You can ask ChatGPT any questions about finances, but to answer accurately and personally, it needs a financial model. Real financial planners use Excel to build a mathematical model of how money flows from income to expenses, and if anything is left over, it goes to investments. The model tracks loans and asset values. Then the planner can tell you things about the future like when you can retire, whether you can buy that home you're dreaming about, etc.
Building a financial model and managing it in Excel is difficult and unintuitive. That is why I imagined a canvas, like a whiteboard with figures on it, as the best way to visualize a financial model. In the background, the program maintains a detailed financial model and communicates with the OpenAI API so it can answer questions and even build a model from you just talking to it about your income, expenses, and assets and liabilities.
